Neuchâtel

“Once in a lifetime…”

Very well said, Kristina- and exactly the same words that I would use to describe this fairytale weekend.  From the beginning of our scenic journey along the shores of Lake Geneva to our delightful crêperie experience to ending our day with a majestic view of the sunset on the hilltops in the Swiss Alps, Neuchâtel couldn’t have been a more wonderful trip.

Like many of our adventures so far, Neuchâtel was an unplanned, spontaneous day-trip.  We literally booked our tickets the night before, and hadn’t done any research into this quaint town before departing on Saturday.  I pictured Neuchâtel to be this tiny town with a large cathedral in the center of town and perhaps a few fountains scattered around town.  Not knowing what to expect upon my arrival, I was completely blown away by the beauty of Neuchâtel as soon as we stepped outside the train station.

Neuchâtel

Words cannot possibly convey the emotions we felt at this breathtaking experience.  Every corner we turned, we were greeted with an idyllic view of Lake Neuchâtel- the Swiss Alps stretched out in front of us, the glistening waters, and the sounds of seagulls and swans as they went about their way.  Even though we were all aware that the whole scene that was playing out in front of us was entirely real, the whole experience felt so surreal in a sense.

We couldn’t stop squealing with pure excitement at the incredible natural beauty and even questioned if this was real or just a figment of our wild imaginations at times.  With the sun shining brightly and the weather so graciously cooperating with us, the conditions were perfect for continuing our explorations.

When I think of Switzerland, beaches aren’t usually the first thing that come to mind.  More like mountains, snow, and skiing- but much to our surprise, we stumbled upon this semi-secluded beach-like area as we headed towards the lake.  With no plans in mind and no where to be, we set up a cute little picnic on the rocky shores of Lake Neuchâtel and ate our sandwiches to the tune of waves crashing on the shore in the background.

It was such a quiet and serene moment as we all sat in silence, admiring the Swiss Alps with deep fondness.  As I discover Switzerland more and more, I find myself cultivating a better understanding and appreciation for nature.  Whether it was skipping rocks on the beach or catching the sunset over the Alps or even just listening to nature,  there were many moments yesterday where we traded in the chatter for periods of silence in order to fully take in and appreciate all of the unparalleled natural beauty surrounding us.

You just couldn’t help but feel at peace with yourself and your surroundings and it was the most wonderful feeling in the world.  As quickly as these two weeks have gone by, it’s moments of silence, of tranquility, of calmness that really remind me to pause each day and appreciate all that is around me.
